PARIS, France – On Wednesday, June 25, Dr. Emmanuel Urey Yarkpawolo, Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Liberia, and Dr. Teeko Tozay Yorlay, Sr., Liberia’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, participated in the opening activities of the 33rd Session of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Assembly in Paris, France.
Liberia’s participation in the Assembly follows a historic milestone: under the leadership of Dr. Yorlay, the country was officially admitted into the IOC in May 2025, becoming its 151st Member State.
The IOC of UNESCO promotes international cooperation in marine sciences to improve the sustainable management of the ocean, coasts, and marine resources. It supports its Member States by coordinating programs in ocean science, observation and services, tsunami warnings, capacity development, and ocean literacy.
According to a release, Dr. Yorlay and Dr. Yarkpawolo are proudly representing Liberia on the global stage, ensuring that the nation remains actively engaged and visible within the international community on matters of environmental and ocean governance.
“Their participation marks a significant step forward in strengthening Liberia’s commitment to international environmental collaboration and sustainable ocean management,” the release said.
