The Female Lone Star defeated Mali 1-0 in a tightly contested third-place playoff, clinching a historic third-place finish and marking a major milestone for women’s football in Liberia.
Their return was met with a hero’s welcome, led by Liberia Football Association (LFA) President Mustapha Raji, Deputy Minister of Sports G. Andy Quamie, and National Culture Ambassador Kerkura Kamara. Members of the football community, supporters, and well-wishers also gathered at the airport to celebrate the team’s achievement.
Speaking to reporters at RIA, LFA President Mustapha Raji praised the players and technical staff for their performance and dedication.
“This is a testament to the potential of our women. They played with heart, discipline, and patriotism,” Raji said. “We now call on women in national leadership and across the board to rally the government and private sector to provide adequate financial backing for the growth of women’s football in Liberia.”
Deputy Minister of Sports G. Andy Quamie also expressed satisfaction with the result, describing it as the beginning of something bigger for Liberian women’s football.
“Third place may not be the championship, but it is a significant start,” Quamie noted. “This result is laying the foundation for bigger trophies, and we remain committed to supporting these girls to reach even higher.”
Ambassador Kerkura Kamara and the National Culture Troop added a patriotic touch to the welcome ceremony, delivering vibrant traditional performances including drumming, dancing, and chants. The display underscored the unity and national pride surrounding the team’s achievement.
The cultural showcase sent a strong message of support from the Liberian people, as the entire nation rallied behind its daughters in recognition of their historic feat.
While Liberia’s women did not lift the championship trophy, their third-place finish is widely viewed as a symbolic victory for the broader development of women’s sports in the country.
The team’s performance throughout the WAFU tournament—battling through tough regional competition—has inspired renewed hope for Liberia’s prospects in future international campaigns.
As the players regroup and look ahead, their success in Mauritania sends a clear message: women’s football in Liberia is rising, and with sustained support, the path to future glory is within reach.
