The First Division League’s thrilling title race sees both clubs locking horns in a match with massive implications for the trophy’s destination come this April. Watanga, who currently sits at the top of the table, with coach Copper Sannah eyeing a historic championship with his third club after winning the league with BYC and LPRC Oilers, while Chebli aims to secure a double for the shipping boys in two seasons.
The Tusa Field in Gardnerville will be the center of attraction when both teams continue the race for the title, with second-place LISCR FC hosting league leaders Watanga FC today, April 3, 2024, with both sides chasing history in a huge clash at the top of the table. Watanga FC leads the 14-team table with 52 points from 23 matches played, while LISCR FC is in second place with 45 points from the same number of games played. Watanga go into today’s game seven points clear of LISCR and will need a point to be crowned champions, while a win for LISCR will mean Watanga will have to win their next games against Paynesville FC to lift the title.
In the first leg, Watanga FC secured a convincing 4-0 win over LISCR FC, something the shipping boys will not want to see repeated, especially at their home venue, to avoid defeat. Copper Sannah, who came close to winning the league with LISCR during his time in the dugout for the Shipping boys, will set a record for himself if Watanga win the league, which will be his fourth title with three different clubs. He won the league with BYC and also won back-to-back league titles with LPRC Oilers.
However, there could be a three-way tussle for the trophy this season if the Soldier boys of Watanga FC don’t win their game with both LISCR and Paynesville FC, as Paynesville FC still finds themselves in contention after a blistering start to the year.
In another match to be played in continuation of the 2023/2024 league season, the Pharmacists of Global Pharma FC will welcome Heaven Eleven FC at the D. Tweh Sports in New Kru Town. Both teams are safe from relegation, so they will be playing for the record and to end the season in a comfortable place.
At the Antoinette Tubman Stadium, it will be a fight to stay in the top flight when third from bottom FC Kallon Liberia FC takes on Invincible Eleven FC, who sit a place above the relegation zone. A win for Kallon FC will take them a point above IE with 26 points, while a win for IE or draw will ensure the yellow boys stay above Kallon FC with 28 points for a win or 26 points from a draw.
Paynesville FC, who progressed to the final of the Orange Cup over the weekend, will face Mighty Barrolle at the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex Practice Pitch.
