Monrovia – The National Elections Commission (NEC) has said that, the new date for the Montserrado County Senatorial and Representative by-elections will only be announced depending on how soon the elections materials arrive in country.
The Chairman of the NEC, Cllr. Jerome Korkoya, made the disclosure at a press conference Friday, July 12, after a meeting with political candidates of the pending Montserrado County by-elections.
“We are in contact with the vendor and we have the assurance that they will be giving us some confirmation very soon. We are hoping that we may be able to announce the date of the arrival of election materials by next week,” disclosed Chairman Korkoya.
Meanwhile, political candidates and authorities at the NEC have agreed in a meeting that the campaign period is open until a date is announced for the by-elections.
The meeting with all of the candidates in the Montserrado Senatorial and Representative Elections was reportedly prompted by a phone call placed by one of the senatorial candidates, Mr. Abraham Darius Dillon to the Chairman of NEC, Jerome Kokorya, concerning some issues he had with the election process.
“I called the Chairman two days ago because I wanted to know definitively whether we will hold these elections. What is holding the NEC from conducting the elections in keeping with schedule and our conversation resulted to this meeting,” Dillon stated.
The NEC is, however, warning all stakeholders including political parties, independent candidates and their supporters as well as the media to desist from any and all acts that have the propensity to undermine Liberia’s democracy.
