Liberia: WONGOSOL Raises Alarm Over GAC Audit Findings, Calls for Anti-Corruption Court

Monrovia — The Women NGOs Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL) has expressed serious concern over the findings contained in a recent audit report released on May 11, 2026, by the General Auditing Commission, which highlighted major financial discrepancies involving the Liberia Revenue Authority, the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, and the Central Bank of Liberia.

In a press statement issued Tuesday, WONGOSOL described the reports of untraceable public revenues and weak accountability systems as “deeply alarming,” especially at a time when many Liberians continue to face economic hardship, limited access to social services, and growing inequality.

According to the organization, the resources in question are intended to support critical national sectors including healthcare, education, infrastructure, protection services, and economic opportunities for vulnerable populations, particularly women and children.

WONGOSOL stated that the gravity of the audit findings reinforces the urgent need for the speedy establishment and operationalization of the proposed National Anti-Corruption Court to ensure that allegations of financial mismanagement and economic crimes are independently and transparently investigated and prosecuted.

The organization noted that its position is grounded in Liberia’s national and international legal commitments, including Article 90(c) of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia, which condemns the abuse of public office for private gain and promotes accountability and transparency in governance.

WONGOSOL further referenced Liberia’s obligations under the United Nations Convention against Corruption, the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption, and the ECOWAS Protocol on the Fight Against Corruption.

The group emphasized that establishing an independent Anti-Corruption Court is not only a governance priority, but also a legal and moral obligation necessary to restore public trust, strengthen the rule of law, and deter impunity.

WONGOSOL also commended the General Auditing Commission for carrying out its constitutional responsibility and urged the Government of Liberia to act swiftly and transparently in addressing the audit findings.

At the same time, the organization called on the GAC to clearly identify the administrations under which the alleged unlawful acts occurred in order to give the public a clearer understanding of the timelines and responsibilities connected to the reported discrepancies.

The organization additionally encouraged the institutions named in the audit report to respond promptly to the findings, warning that failure to do so could lead the public to regard the findings as verified.

While applauding Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. for leading the fight against corruption, WONGOSOL stressed that stronger and more deliberate actions are now required to address corruption and safeguard public resources.

“Liberians deserve a system where public resources are managed responsibly and where accountability is visible, impartial, and enforceable,” the statement said.
