Monrovia – At 10:00 am on Friday, August 30th, 2019, 115 high school students arrived at the Silverbird TM Cinema in Mamba Point. They were present for a whole day of events scheduled and planned by DKT Liberia- a non-profit organization which aims to promote Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights.
Upon their arrival, the students filled out questionnaires that tested their knowledge of sexual and reproductive health. The students were then taught about fundamental reproductive care such as condoms, oral and injectable birth control mechanisms and emergency contraceptive pills. The DKT Liberia staff facilitated these educational sessions.
The informational sessions were followed by a performance of the Fiesta condom song by comedian Ezy Pain and musician Anitram.
The song served as an aid to educate the students about sexual reproductive health and raised awareness on the importance of family planning services; listen out for the song on your local radio waves.
After the musical performance students watched several sexual reproductive health videos on the big screen that was very informative about safe sex and sexually transmitted infections (STI).
The highlight of the day came right after the sexual reproductive health videos when students tuned in to the epic movie “Spider Man, Far From Home.”
Students were thrilled right from the opening scene of the movie as they clapped gave out screams.
DKT Liberia emphasizes the importance of family planning services because they believe that all women and men have a fundamental right to decide whether and when to become parents, regardless of their country of origin or socioeconomic status.
The students present were from the African Cooperative School, Soul Clinic Community School, Kendeja Junior High School, Weltona High School, Angel Michael Catholic High School, and Light House High School.
DKT Liberia intends to have these educational talks twice a month. Watch out, your school might be next!
