Liberia: Ex-VP Taylor Appears Before Police as NPP Chairman George Mulbah Calls for Calm

According to the NPP chairman, the party remains concerned about the invitation because of Taylor’s position within the organization, but he emphasized that the leadership would refrain from drawing conclusions before the police disclose the circumstances surrounding the questioning

MONROVIA — Former Vice President and National Patriotic Party (NPP) Standard Bearer Jewel Howard Taylor has appeared before the Liberia National Police (LNP) for questioning in connection with the ongoing cocaine investigation.

Taylor’s appearance at the LNP headquarters on Wednesday morning marks a new development in the widening drug investigation, which has continued to attract national attention and generated intense public discussion over the identities and possible connections of individuals being questioned by authorities.

Police have reportedly identified the former Vice President as a person of interest in the investigation. Her appearance, however, does not in itself mean that she has been accused of a crime or charged with any offense, as authorities continue their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the drug case.

Her presence at police headquarters also comes at a politically sensitive moment, given her current role as Standard Bearer of the NPP and the heightened public interest surrounding the cocaine investigation.

As Taylor entered the police headquarters for questioning, the NPP moved quickly to discourage speculation and possible political reactions among its membership.

NPP National Chairman Atty. George Sylvester Mulbah Sr. said the party had received information that its Standard Bearer had been invited by the police but acknowledged that the leadership had not yet been informed of the specific reason for the invitation.

“We have received information that the Standard of the NPP was invited to the police station,” Mulbah said in a statement posted on his Facebook page.

According to the NPP chairman, the party remains concerned about the invitation because of Taylor’s position within the organization, but he emphasized that the leadership would refrain from drawing conclusions before the police disclose the circumstances surrounding the questioning.

“While we do not know the reason for such an invitation we are concerned as a political party,” Mulbah stated.

His comments reflect a cautious approach by the opposition political party as investigators continue to pursue the drug case. Rather than directly challenging the police action, Mulbah urged NPP partisans to remain patient and allow the investigative process to unfold.

“I am appealing to all our partisans to remain calm pending the disclosure of the nature for such an invitation,” he added.

The chairman further assured supporters that the party would remain focused while awaiting the outcome of the police engagement. “The NPP as a law abiding institution will remain focused pending the outcome of the police invitation,” Mulbah said.

The appeal for calm comes as the appearance of Taylor is likely to generate renewed political and public interest in the cocaine investigation. Her status as a former Vice President and current political standard bearer makes any involvement in a police inquiry particularly significant, regardless of the eventual outcome of the investigation.

The police questioning is expected to provide investigators with an opportunity to obtain information from Taylor that authorities consider relevant to the ongoing drug investigation. The precise nature of the questions being asked, however, had not been publicly disclosed at the time of the report.
