MONROVIA – The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the Millennium Challenge Account Liberia (MCA-L) marked the successful closeout of the $257 million MCC Liberia Compact which aimed to address limited access to reliable and affordable electricity in the country and poor-quality road infrastructure. The compact funded the rehabilitation of Liberia’s largest power source, the Mt. Coffee Hydropower Plant, supported the creation of an independent energy sector regulator, developed a training program for technicians in the electricity sector, supported improved delivery of electricity services by the Liberia Electricity Company, and established a data-driven road maintenance system.

The trial of Sierra Leonean national and Tampere resident, Gibril Massaquoi, will begin on 1st February 2021 before the Pirkanmaa District Court in Finland, and is expected to last for several months. This follows today’s indictment of Massaquoi by the Office of the Prosecutor on charges of aggravated war crimes, aggravated crimes against humanity and murders – which he allegedly committed not in his home country, Sierra Leone, but in neighbouring Liberia.

INTRODUCTION Exactly five years ago, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Netherlands provided funding for a program codenamed Funding Leadership Opportunities for Women (FLOW) to be piloted in Liberia, Burundi and Guatemala. The piloting was achieved under the respective auspecies of IBIS, Oxfam and Impunity Watch. The FLOW Program was meant to fight sexual and gender-based violence, promote women’s political participation and increase their voices in leadership and decision making.
