Liberia: President-elect Boakai Proposes Annual conference on Diaspora Engagement

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – Addressing the Liberian communities in Providence, Rhode Island, President-elect Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. expressed gratitude to the diaspora for their instrumental role in the recently concluded elections and outlined his vision for the future of Liberia.

The formal welcoming program, organized by the JNB Movement New England Chapter and attended by various Liberian community leaders, saw President-elect Boakai accompanied by the First Lady-elect, Mrs. Kartumu Boakai. The event brought together Liberians from across the Northeastern United States, highlighting the unity and strength of the diaspora.

Reflecting on the challenging election campaign, President-elect Boakai acknowledged the immense support he received from Liberians, both at home and abroad. He emphasized the significance of the people’s voice in sustaining Liberia’s democracy, recognizing the Liberian Diaspora’s critical role in fostering a global movement for positive change.

Addressing the diaspora, Boakai expressed his deepest appreciation for their financial and material contributions, expertise, media outreach, activism, and critical voices that played a pivotal role in raising awareness and popularizing the message of change and transformation.

He spoke passionately about the challenges facing Liberia and outlined his vision for addressing them. He emphasized the need for inclusive governance, popular participation in decision-making, and the importance of empowering the people to ensure political stability and social cohesion.

President-elect Boakai addressed economic issues, advocating for a shift in the structure of the economy to reduce inequality. He emphasized the importance of natural resource exploitation benefiting the entire population, with a focus on value addition and sustainable development.

Agriculture was highlighted as a key sector for economic growth, with President-elect Boakai calling for strategic investments to leverage Liberia’s comparative advantage in agriculture. He also emphasized the need to address historical structural barriers that have led to inequality and social tensions.

Boakai proposed an annual conference on diaspora engagement to facilitate collaboration between Liberians abroad and the development agenda of the homeland. Recognizing the diaspora’s significant impact on Liberia’s development, he pledged to nurture and cultivate their role as a serious partner in implementing the country’s development agenda.

He called on all Liberians, both at home and in the diaspora, to join him in the hard work ahead. He reiterated his commitment to lead as a servant leader and urged everyone to work together to build a functional and equitable society for generations to come.
