Klay, Bomi County – The European Union (EU) has inaugurated a project to maintain the Bo-Waterside road for 5 years, with funding from the European Union and the United Kingdom.
Turning over the project to a Liberian contractor at Klay Junction in Bomi County on Tuesday, 10 May, 2016, European Union Ambassador to Liberia, Tiina Intelmann stated that the contractors would repair potholes, cut grass and clean ditches to ensure the thoroughfare remains functional and not damaged by water.
Ambassador Intelmann said that Liberia was the only country in West Africa with routine maintenance of its entire asphalted road network.
She noted that the European Union was working with the Ministry of Public Works to develop their capacity to manage road maintenance in the long term, even after the end of the current five year project.
Ambassador Intelmann stressed the importance of road safety and asked users of the Bo-Waterside road to call the numbers on the billboards in case of any problems.
She thanked the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning for working with the European Union to ensure an effective procurement process.
The EU diplomat also used the occasion to announce that, with EU funding, the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning has just awarded a contract to design the missing parts of the coastal highway. This design work is the first step towards securing funding for this important project.
