Monrovia – In the aftermath of the death of Exodus Kamara, 30, police in Monrovia have charged two private security officers with negligent homicide.
Report by Kennedy L. Yangian [email protected]
Kamara died on the Old Road in Sinkor on April 24, 2019, and the two officers, Abraham Garduor and Junior Sayee of the Alarm Security Service (ASS) have been charged for negligent causing his demise.
They were arraigned at the Monrovia City Court at the Temple of Justice, Thursday, May 2, before they were detained at the Monrovia Central Prison pending prosecution.
Garduor and Sayee have worked as security guards at the Residence of female lawyer Cllr. Gidu Johnson on the Smart Road, Old Road where the deceased was reported to have been allegedly flogged leading to his severe injury and subsequent death.
Cllr. Johnson, according to report, is an associate of the Dean and Associates Law Office, a firm previously owned by now Justice Minister Cllr. Frank Musa Dean.
In the charge sheet obtained by FPA, the incident occurred at about 4:00 am on April 24, 2019, when the two Defendants noticed Kamara on the property of the lawyer ( Johnson) trying to steal planks.
They alarmed that he was a thief, woke up Cllr. Johnson from her bed who advised thes two Defendants to let Kamara go and she went back to bed.
Also, in its investigation report the police added that a few minutes after the lawyer went to bed, Kamara was still seen in the care of the two Defendants when a group of angry crowd came shouting and throwing stones in demand of the victim which claimed the attention of the lawyer for the second time thereby prompting her to call in the police.
According to the police, when the deceased was beaten by the mob, he was then taken to a ghetto by some friends, where he later died after a couple of hours.
“In view of the foregoing facts and circumstances and lack of eyewitness to directly explain exactly the role played by the Defendants the investigation resolved to charge the two security guards, Sayee and Garduor with the crime of negligent homicide in violation of Chapter 14, subchapter A, Section14.3 of the revised Penal Law of Liberia,” states the police charge sheet.
However, the family members of the late Kamara have condemned the police report, terming it as “erroneous and contrary to the fact”.
Elizabeth Kamara, mother of the deceased, told FPA Thursday, May 2 that “the name rogue given to her son was a cover-up story”, adding, “if you say my son went in the fence which no-one can easily penetrate because it is electrified then where is the plank in question that he went to steal?”
Ms Kamara alleges that it was on the order of Cllr. Johnson that her son was flogged and later died because her son and lawyer have been at loggerhead for some time over the payment of his salary.
She claimed her son once worked for the female lawyer as a driver and she sacked him and had refused to pay him.
“Just look in the police charge sheet so so lies there is no statement from the security guards that they have accused to explain what happened,” she said sobbing.
“The police only did their own thing to cover-up for that lawyer where is justice but God will fight my battle.”
