Liberia: Grand Bassa’s Lawmaker Says Opposition Parties Must Unite Their Respective Lawmakers

Buchanan – Grand Bassa County Electoral District #4 Representative Vincent Willie says opposition political parties must firstly unite their respective lawmakers at Capitol before forming collaborations.

The lawmaker spoke to FrontPageAfrica on Thursday, February 21, 2019, an hour after the signing of a landmark resolution amongst four major opposition political parties in Monrovia.

The resolution was signed by standard bearers of Unity Party (UP), Liberty Party (LP), Alternative National Congress (ANC), and the All Liberian Party (ALP).

But Representative Willie asserted that to further strengthen the collaboration, the four parties must ensure their current lawmakers are working in sync.

UP has 21 lawmakers, ALP has three and LP has three lawmakers, which amount to the total of 27 along with several other independent lawmakers at the Legislature.

He said collaborating parties must ensure that their respective lawmakers, who are in good number along with other independent lawmakers, unite and raise the debate at the House of Representaive and the Liberian Senate.

“If we are just to ourselves and the Liberian people, the debate must start at the Capitol Building where decisions are made,” said Willie, who is an Independent in the House.

“If the collaborating parties work with their lawmakers the argument could change.”

Rep. Willie stressed that the major opposition parties need to ensure that their lawmakers are working along with their manifesto.

“When did any of these parties take action against their lawmakers for going against their party’s manifesto and decisions that are contrary to the party not in favor of the people”, Willie said.

“I am of the strongest conviction that if these parties unite their lawmakers and maintain them as well as adding independent and other minority lawmakers, this could help in crafting the best way to move the country forward and provide policy directions to this CDC-led Government “. Representative Vicent Willie won as an independent candidate in the 2017 elections defeating former Liberty Party Representative Baron Brown.
