Liberia’s Maritime Authority Sacks 16 Amid Financial Constraints

Monrovia – The Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) has embarked on a dismissal spree, laying off over 16 persons in its latest batch.

This is the second batch of dismissal in a year. The first was carried out in November 2015 which saw over 60 persons losing their jobs.

In the notice letter of redundancy to one of the affected staffers, LiMA said its action was due to certain financial constraints the entity was faced with, and that it had no option but to lay off some of its employees.

“The Liberia Maritime Authority regrets to inform you that in view of the significant decline in our operational budget, and due to certain financial constraints it is encountering, it has become necessary to embark on series of cost saving measures including a reduction in the number of positions.

As a result, your position is made redundant effective November 1, 2016,” the notice of redundancy read.

FrontPage Africa has gathered that the Liberia Marine Training Institute (LMTI) has been turned over to LISCR to manage, and as such, LISCR has embarked on the renovation of the LMTI building in Marshall.

The FPA also gathered that the school has been closed due to the renovation, which according to sources, led to the mass dismissal.

Sources have hinted this paper that there is a sour relationship between the leadership of the LiMA and employees of the entity.

The Maritime layoff adds to those of the National Oil Company of Liberia, Firestone, ArcelorMittal and China Union, among others.
