Liberia: Ministry of Transport, Partners Hold Meteorology Strategic Plan

Monrovia – On Thursday, January 24 several stakeholders gathered to hold Liberia’s meteorological service (LMS) national strategic plan, which aims at reviving and making it autonomous.

Sirleaf Tyler, Deputy Minister of Transport for Insurance, said the strategic plan will improve and set the gateway for the Liberian meteorology service to go autonomous thereby providing the services and products that are needed to enhance the ‘pro-poor agenda’.

He said the strategic plan will help improve meteorologist which is key to flight safety, agriculture and general meteorology in Libera.

LMS comes as a result from efforts made by Liberian delegation that represented Liberia at the World Bank hydromet forum held in Addis Ababa in September 2017.

The delegation was represented by ex-deputy minister for rail and land Juanita Traub Bropleh and they held a special meeting at the margin of the forum at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Arthur Gar-Glahn, Director, LMS said the problems faced by LMS were outlined and request for assistance was informally made.

Dr. William Nyakwada, WMO consultant said climate change has made a change in every country, expressing gratitude for the support from the Liberian Government.

He added that there is a need that such services are accessible and effective urging for partnership.

He said there is also a need to build human capacity so as to ensure that the service is run by Liberians.
