Monrovia – The Governments of Liberia and Japan will sign an Exchange of Notes for another round of KR Food Aid to be referred to as “Food Aid (2018),” which is valued at US$2.7million.
The signatories to the agreement will done by Gbehzohnar Milton Findley, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Liberia, and H.E Mr. Tsutomu Himeno, Ambassador of Japan to Liberia.
This Food Aid Grant will be monetized to support Liberia’s socio-economic development. It can be recalled that the previous KR Food Aid Grants were used to support several economic recovery projects.
The projects included paddy and seed rice, the construction of two warehouses in Lofa, Bong, Nimba and Grand Gedeh Counties being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Human Resource Capacity Building Project at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the LIFE FUND implemented by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
The signing of the US$2.7million Food Aid Grant comes barely two weeks after the signing of a grant approval of LRD$587,491.874 for the construction of the 282 Low Cost Housing Units in Sasstown, Grand Kru County.
The Government of Liberia and the Government of Japan are also holding bilateral discussions at the highest level for the construction and relocation of the Gorbachop Market to the Omega Village Community together with the Main Redlight Market.
This is intended to give way for the World Bank Road expansion project between the corridor of Coca-Cola Factory and ELWA junction.
The relocation of more than 21,600 marketers and hackers is a major concern to the President Weah’s Government. The relocation of the two markets is intended to achieve two of President Weah’s development agenda.
“It will ultimately fulfill President Weah’s aspiration and wishes that the Redlight, Paynesville belt is given better scenery and completely decongested to ease the movement of people and goods,” a release from the government said.
“It will provide better trading environment to the indigenous population, improve food hygiene and safety and enhance their economic activities.”
The release added that the Liberian government is “exceedingly glad for the Government of Japan continued support to Liberia’s economic recovery programs geared at addressing its intractable development challenges”, while promising to scrupulously execute the projects for which it funds are intended.
