In recent weeks, the main campus of the university has been a scene of chaos as students’ riot, over the suspension of the Student Unification Party’s (SUP) Chairman Butu Levi, escalated beyond the campus of the university onto the principal street.
Even though calm has returned on the campuses of nation’s highest institution of learning, many people including students are accusing some officials of the government of masterminding the August 3, 2018 riot.
Addressing journalists at his ULSU offices for the first time following the riot, the president of the students union, Flomo Mau Maiwo, Wednesday, August 15, accused some government officials whom he said were trained by SUP and are working to instigate violent among the student population on the University of Liberia.
According to him, said tactic from these state actors only aimed at silencing student voices will not yield any fruit.
ULSU president Maiwo added: “We call on those government officials in the CDC-led government to refrain from meddling in the internal affairs of SUP and student politics in general at the University of Liberia. You should focus on policy issues directed at enhancing the achievement of President George Weah’s pro-poor agenda.”
Maiwo continued: “Such ferocious attempt to ordain regime elements to positions of leadership in student structures so as to promote the agenda of the government will not succeed.”
According to the ULSU boss, it is because of the association and training of SUP at the University of Liberia that many people are now on the stage of national politics.
“But in recent times, some have decided to result to insensitive opportunism. We see their outbursts against the party and their ploy to depose the Chairman of SUP, Comrade Butu Levi as childish, unscientific and an impulse of outrageous sycophancy.”
Adding up, Maiwo condemned all violent actions.
“Our leadership doesn’t and will never stomach violence as critical intellect is the bedrock for addressing issues and finding a solution to complex phenomena.”
