Monrovia — Monrovia Cinema Plus is making a grand statement about the future of Liberia’s film industry, opening with a bang through a week of film screenings, professional development, and celebrations honoring Liberian creativity. Located on the third floor of Monrovia Super Mall in Congo Town, the new premiere movie theater is bringing the magic of cinema back to Liberia while creating opportunities for local filmmakers to showcase their work on the big screen.
The celebrations began October 14–15 with the Journey Home Film Festival, which showcased some of Liberia’s top films entered in the competition. The festival provided a platform for Liberian filmmakers to share their stories, celebrate their talent, and connect with audiences in a professional cinema setting. On October 16, the theater hosted a Filmmakers’ Workshop focused on teaching local producers and directors how to prepare and submit their films for theatrical exhibitions. The training reinforced Monrovia Cinema Plus’s commitment to supporting filmmakers beyond screenings by helping them understand the standards and processes required to bring their work to the cinema. The festival culminated with the Liberia Film Awards on October 17th, where Liberian films and its filmmakers were rewarded and celebrated.

The excitement continued on Sunday, October 18, with the theater’s soft opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by distinguished representatives of the Government of Liberia, the American Embassy, the United Nations community, the business sector, and other invited guests, including family and friends. The ceremonial ribbon was cut by representatives of Monrovia Cinema Plus ownership, Monrovia City Mayor John-Charuk Siafa, U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Kristin Gilmore, and Hon. Erasmus T. Williams, Head of the Office of Diaspora Affairs at the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs. The symbolic moment celebrated a significant milestone in the revival of Liberia’s cinema culture and the power of collaboration between local leadership and diaspora investors.
Hon. Erasmus T. Williams attended on behalf of the Office of Diaspora Affairs, highlighting the importance of diaspora engagement and investment in Liberia’s development. Chargé d’Affaires Kristin Gilmore was also present and acknowledged the Americans participating in the joint diaspora investment behind the theater. Their involvement reflects the power of cross-border collaboration and a shared commitment to creating opportunities in Liberia’s creative economy.

Mayor Siafa joined the celebration alongside other distinguished guests. The owners and management of Monrovia Super Mall, Ali Munir Rathore and Rodalyn Vinas, were also present and delivered remarks, underscoring the importance of partnerships between the private sector, diaspora investors, and Liberia’s growing entertainment industry.
Adding a special touch to the occasion, guests were treated to a special partial screening of Michael, the biographical film portraying the life of global music icon Michael Jackson.
The theater came alive with laughter, excitement, and enthusiastic reactions as guests enjoyed the opportunity to experience the film on the big screen. Many had not yet seen the movie and were thrilled to share this special cinematic experience in Liberia’s newest movie theater. The screening offered a memorable preview of the entertainment, atmosphere, and shared experiences Monrovia Cinema Plus hopes to bring to audiences.

In a further show of support for local talent, Monrovia Cinema Plus has selected five Liberian films from the Journey Home Film Festival and awards- Before Grace, Broken Mirror, Beautiful Misery, Shadows of Sunshine, Good Karma, along with Allyson Brown’s film No, Not Me, to screen throughout this week leading up to the official grand opening. The theater is calling this endeavor “LIBERIA MOVIE WEEK! This special lineup gives audiences an opportunity to experience Liberian storytelling while providing filmmakers with a valuable platform to reach moviegoers.
The week of activities culminates in the Grand Opening of Monrovia Cinema Plus on Friday, October 23, 2026. The public is warmly invited to join the celebration and experience a new destination for entertainment, culture, and community in Liberia.
