Mali Edges Liberia 1-0 in Monrovia, Leaves Lone Star with Back-to-Back Defeats

The narrow defeat leaves the Lone Star rooted at the bottom of Group K, without a point from their opening two matches, following a 3-1 loss to Rwanda in Kigali on September 25 .

Mali, by contrast, maintained their perfect start to the campaign, moving to six points after pairing Tuesday’s away win with an opening 3-1 victory over Cape Verde.

Under Confederation of African Football (CAF) rules, the top two teams in Group K will qualify directly for the 2027 finals, leaving Liberia with an increasingly steep climb to secure one of the qualification spots.

Tense First-Half Display

Liberia adopted a disciplined and cautious approach early on, ceding possession to the visitors, while seeking to strike on the counter-attack.

The Lone Star came close to breaking the deadlock in the 80th minute when midfielder Oscar Dorley found space on the edge of the box, but his shot was blocked twice by a resolute Malian backline.

As the half wore on, the Eagles of Mali intensified their pressure, forcing Liberia into deep defensive blocks.

Liberia physical approach yielded the game’s first booking in the 22nd minute when midfielder  Mohammed Sangaré received a yellow card.

Liberia goalkeeper Ashley Williams produced a crucial save in the 38th minute to keep the scores level.

Two minutes later, Mali advances again, after a miscommunication between Williams and his central defenders, but the resulting effort drifted narrowly wide, as the teams went into the break deadlocked at 0-0.

Second-Half Tactical Changes & Agony

Seeking greater creative spark, Liberia’s technical staff made a double substitution at the start of the second half, introducing forward Peter Wilson and midfielder Philip Tarnu in place of Sylvanus Nimely and Edward Ledlum.

The tactical adjustment nearly paid off in the 66th minute. Wilson latched onto a precise through ball, controlled smoothly, and attempted to slide his shot past the advance of the Malian goalkeeper. With supporters inside the SKD already celebrating, the ball rolled agonizingly past the far post by inches.

It proved to be the turning point of the match.

Mali made the hosts pay for the missed opportunity in the 78th minute. Following an unforced giveaway by Liberia in their own defensive third, Mali counter-attacked decisively to break the deadlock and take a 1-0 lead.

Liberia pushed forward aggressively in the final ten minutes in search of a late equalizer, but Mali’s defense held firm until the final whistle.

The Road Ahead

The result leaves Liberia in a precarious position in Group K, needing a drastic turnaround in their remaining four qualifiers to keep their AFCON 2027 dreams alive.
