Monrovia – Workers of the Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS) have resolved to stage an indefinite go – slow action in demand of better welfare.
The go-slow action will commence Monday, June 4.
The decision for the action was reached Monday, May 28 following a massive gathering of workers of the national broadcaster.
Workers of LBS in a four-count resolution for the go-slow action are demanding salary increment, more budgetary support to enable the System to perform to its statutory mandate, conducive working environment, transportation and for the merit system to be exercised at the entity.
They stated that over the past 12 years under the Unity Party – Led Government workers of the LBS, especially the News, Radio, Security, Technical Departments including other vital department have not experienced any increment.
“Currently, all substations across the country are down due to the low budgetary allotment and would pose a major hindrance to propagating government’s various policies, the release disclosed.
As part of the go-slow action, major programs on the State Broadcaster including newscasts on both radio and television will not be held and flagship presenters will not present.
The release also disclosed that from 1. 2 million United States dollars, the entity’s budget was reduced to 800 – thousand and in this year’s national budget was slashed to little over 600 thousand United States Dollars, something that is worrisome to the LBS workforce.
Recently, LIBSWU’s President, G. Moses K. Dorbor, stated that journalists at the State-run broadcast entity are the least paid compared to their professional colleagues not only in the sub-region but around the world.
Mr. Dorbor, addressing a news conference last week in Paynesville, said this must claim the attention of not only state actors but the ordinary Liberian people who squarely relied on the LBS to get accurate and factual information about the government on its various policies.
