Monrovia — Former President George Weah has extended warm Eid Al-Adha greetings to members of the Islamic community both in Liberia and across the world.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” is one of the most significant holidays in Islam. The celebration commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son in obedience to God before God provided a ram to sacrifice in his place.
In a release dated Wednesday, May 27, the office of the former President described Eid Al-Adha as a profound, solemn, and joyful occasion.
“Former President George M. Weah has extended warm greetings, congratulations, and best wishes to Muslims in Liberia and around the world as they celebrate Eid Al-Adha,” the release stated.
It added: “It is one of the most important holidays in the Muslim calendar. The celebration honors Prophet Abraham’s unwavering devotion to God and his willingness to sacrifice his son before God intervened and provided a ram in his place.”
Former President Weah also thanked Muslims across Liberia for their continued contributions to the country’s growth and development.
He encouraged the Islamic community to use the festive period as a time for reconciliation, unity, peace, compassion, and gratitude, while reflecting on the spirit of sacrifice and sharing in the joy of the celebration.
The office of the ormer President further stated: “Eid Mubarak to all Muslims in
Liberia and around the world.”
Muslims around the world observe the holiday through special prayers at mosques, gatherings with family and friends, and acts of charity to support those in need.
The celebration also includes sharing meals, exchanging greetings, and, where culturally and legally practiced, sacrificing animals such as sheep, goats, or cows, with the meat distributed among family members, neighbors, and vulnerable people in society.
The holiday takes place during the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca and falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Because the Islamic calendar is based on lunar cycles, the date of Eid Al-Adha changes each year on the Gregorian calendar.
A common greeting during the celebration is “Eid Mubarak,” meaning “Blessed Eid.” The observance typically lasts from one to several days, depending on local traditions and national practices.
