PLEEBO, Maryland County – The Mayor of Pleebo City, Larry Geekor, on Wednesday led efforts to honor several late officials who served the city and Maryland County during the observance of Decoration Day, while warning that families who failed to clean the graves of their deceased relatives could face fines.

As part of activities marking Decoration Day, Mayor Geekor toured various cemeteries across Pleebo, paying tribute to late officials who once served the city as well as others who held key positions in Maryland County but were laid to rest in Pleebo.
Speaking to FrontPage Africa Wednesday morning at the Pleebo Central Cemetery, Mayor Geekor said his administration provided logistical support to families of the deceased leaders to assist with the decoration of their graves.
“We honored the late Ralph Y. Wesseh, who served as City Mayor after the Liberian Civil War, late Aloysius Hne, who served as District Commissioner before his death, late Kondeh Keita, former Maryland County Gender Coordinator, late businessman John Siah and several other late officials,” Mayor Geekor said.
He noted that the deceased leaders made significant contributions to the growth and development of Pleebo City during their lifetime. “These officials contributed immensely to the growth of Pleebo City before death took them away. Today we are here to honor them so that their legacies will continue to serve as a reminder for our people,” he added.
Meanwhile, Mayor Geekor disclosed that the city authority will begin identifying families who failed to clean the graves of their deceased relatives during the Decoration Day observance.
According to him, in keeping with the city’s ordinance, individuals, who failed to comply with the intended purpose of Decoration Day, will be invited to the Pleebo City Hall beginning Thursday, where they will be fined and mandated to clean the gravesites.
Decoration Day in Liberia is observed on the second Wednesday in March, when families visit cemeteries to clean and decorate the graves of their loved ones. City authorities say the measure is aimed at encouraging respect for the deceased and maintaining sanitation at public cemeteries.
