Liberia Turns to Foreign Expertise to Rebuild Lone Star

The agreement places sports, particularly football at the center of Liberia Serbia relations, recognizing the game’s power to unite young people and inspire national pride.

MONROVIA – Liberia’s long search for a permanent head coach for its national football team could soon be over and the answer may come from Eastern Europe.

As part of a new bilateral cooperation agreement between Liberia and Serbia, the Serbian government has agreed to deploy a Serbian coach to manage the Lone Star, in what could mark a turning point for a national side that has lacked stability and technical depth in recent years.

The  news comes  following high level talks between Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, and Serbian officials led by  its President Aleksandar Vučić and Minister of Sports Zoran Gajić during Nyanti’s recent visit to Belgrade.

The agreement places sports, particularly football at the center of Liberia Serbia relations, recognizing the game’s power to unite young people and inspire national pride.

A Breakthrough After Years of Uncertainty

Since the departure of former head coach Mario Marinica, the Lone Star has struggled to find a permanent technical leader.

Thomas  Kojo has been serving in an interim capacity, managing recent international fixtures while the Liberia Football Association (LFA) continues its search for a long-term solution.

That search now appears to be nearing an end. The proposed Serbian appointment part of a broader sports diplomacy agreement could introduce a more structured and modern coaching philosophy to Liberia’s national setup.

Football analysts say Serbia’s involvement could bring tactical discipline and a fresh technical direction to a Lone Star side that has shown flashes of promise but continues to struggle for consistency in competitive fixtures.

“Liberia has the talent that’s been missing in structure and a sustained technical program,” one local coach told FrontPage Africa. “If this deal is followed through, it could be the best thing to happen to Liberian football in years.”

Serbia’s Football Pedigree

Serbia is known for producing technically gifted coaches and players, with a long tradition of exporting managerial expertise across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Serbian coaches are widely respected for their tactical organization, defensive structure, and youth development systems qualities Liberia has long lacked at the national team level.

For a Lone Star team currently rebuilding and seeking identity, the timing could be ideal. The Serbian coach’s role is expected to go beyond the senior team extending to coaching clinics, youth development programs, and mentorship for local trainers, according to officials familiar with the agreement.

Sports Diplomacy at Work

During her visit, Minister Nyanti emphasized that sports are not just a game but a “tool for youth empowerment and peacebuilding.”

Serbia, she said, sees Liberia as a partner nation where football can serve as a bridge for cultural and developmental cooperation.

“This engagement is more than a football deal,” Nyanti said. “It’s about creating opportunities for young Liberians through sports building confidence, discipline, and international exposure.”

Hope for the Future

While details of the coach’s arrival and contract terms are yet to be finalized, the announcement has already sparked optimism among Liberian fans who have endured years of inconsistent results and frequent coaching changes.

If successful, the Serbian collaboration could signal the beginning of a new chapter, one where football diplomacy delivers real value on the pitch and strengthens Liberia’s standing in regional competitions.

For now, all eyes are on the LFA and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, as the country waits for the next move and possibly, the arrival of the Serbian tactician who could finally give the Lone Star the direction it has long been missing.

LFA Welcomes Move

In response to the announcement by the Government of Liberia, the Liberia Football Association (LFA) has welcomed the decision.

In a post on its official social media page, the LFA said “The Liberia Football Association commends the Government of Liberia, particularly the Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Mme. Sara Beysolow Nyanti, for the successful conclusion of her official visit to the Republic of Serbia.

“This historic visit goes beyond diplomacy, bringing direct opportunities for football and youth development in Liberia. Under the various agreements signed which include sports, education, economic development, and security Serbia has committed to: Deploying a Serbian coach to support the Liberia National Football Team, Facilitating exchanges and training programs for Liberian teams

Supporting school-level sports development and exploring opportunities for a Sports Academy in Liberia.

“These commitments mark an important step in strengthening our national team and grassroots football while empowering Liberian youth through sports.

“The LFA stands ready to collaborate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and all stakeholders to ensure these agreements are fully implemented for the long-term growth of Liberian football and the pride of our nation.” LFA statement said.
