Liberia: New Peace Consortium Launched to Foster Unity and Sustainable Development

Monrovia – The Liberia National Peace and Reconciliation Consortium (LNPRC) has officially announced its formation as a national platform dedicated to promoting peace, reconciliation, and sustainable development across the country.

Official launch of the new peace consortium was held in Monrovia at the weekend with the aim to bring together diverse voices and institutions, including youth, elders, civil society, traditional leaders, religious groups, and diaspora communities, with the aim of uniting Liberians around a shared vision of healing and progress.

Speaking at the launch, LNPRC’s Head of Secretariat Amb. Konah K.R. Gayetee, stated that the establishment of the consortium comes at a critical time when Liberia continues to grapple with the aftereffects of years of civil conflict, marked by widespread trauma, socio-economic hardship, and political divisions.

“Our mission is clear: to heal the past, unite the present, and build the future,” the LNPRC stated in its release. Peace is not only the absence of war, but also the presence of opportunities, justice, and mutual respect,” said Gayetee.

According to Gayetee, key focus areas of the LNPRC include the promotion of national healing and reconciliation through truth-telling, community dialogues, and historical preservation, supporting vocational training and job creation to reduce poverty-driven crimes and social unrest and addressing the psychological impact of war through trauma-informed programs and reintegration initiatives.

Preserving conflict-related stories and narratives to educate future generations and prevent history from repeating itself.

He said the Consortium also aims to encourage civic engagement, transparency, and inclusive governance nationwide, while at the same time endeavoring to complement national government’s efforts in ensuring that citizens from all walks of life have a role in shaping Liberia’s peaceful and prosperous future.

He called on Liberians at home and abroad to support its vision for reconciliation, unity, and national transformation.

In brief remark, Malcolm W. Joseph, member of the Consortium, emphasized the critical need to promote peace and reconciliation at every level of the society as there cannot and would not be any lasting peace without jobs and opportunities.

“It’s about the overall interest of our country. We will make contribution to ensure that the consortium works. We look forward for collaboration as it relates to peace building initiatives,” noted Mr. Joseph, who is the Executive of the Center for Media Studies and Peacebuilding

Also speaking at the occasion, Rev. G. Hamilton Karsor, another member of the Consortium, describing the formation as a new beginning of work to ensure that the LNPRC becomes a success, adding: “There is no room for sitting, we will be busy in the counties taking on different peace building initiatives.”
