MONROVIA – The Liberia Football Association’s (LFA) “Football for Schools” initiative is making a transformative impact in schools across the country, thanks to the leadership of LFA President Mustapha I. Raji and Executive Committee Member Murvee Gray.

Murvee Gray, who also serves as Chairman on Varsity and Academicals at the LFA and was elected under the Inter-Schools Sports Association (ISSA) banner, recently concluded a six-day tour across six counties—Grand Bassa, Bong, Nimba, Gbarpolu, Margibi, and Montserrado—distributing 120 soccer balls to local schools.
The campaign, designed to promote grassroots football and identify young talent, is more than just about handing out equipment—it’s about changing lives, Gray told FrontPage Africa.
“This is a campaign of the LFA to have more kids playing football so that we can have the next George Weah and James Debbah,” Gray said. “Taking football to the schools is one way we can scout talents, because many of the players who made names for the national team came from school leagues.”
Schools such as E.J. Yancy and Flehla Public Schools in Bong County, Sass Town and Gertrude Yancy Public School in Bomi, Jallahlone Elementary and Eric Scott United Methodist High School in Gbarpolu, and Cienta Public School in Margibi were among the many institutions that benefited.
In Sanniquellie, Nimba County, 22 additional soccer balls were handed over to ISSA representatives to continue expanding the initiative. In some areas, like Baila, Bong County, the arrival of footballs coincided with Palm Sunday celebrations, bringing added joy and community spirit.
Gray, who is also Assistant Minister at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, praised the raw talent he witnessed among students in the counties. “The kids out there have natural talent that needs to be showcased on the big stage,” he added.
