Boniface Satu, who is chair Global and Local Partnership of the Liberia Basketball Association, says it is time all stakeholders come together to share their thoughts on how sports can be developed in the country.
Speaking over the weekend on Joy FM 101.5, Mr. Satu said sports play a pivotal role in any country, and as such, there is a need for the government to invest in sports and not just football or basketball.
“We need a national sports dialogue that brings about cohesive partnerships between governmental bodies and sports organizations aimed at fostering the robust growth and enhancement of athletic programs across the nation,” he said.
Satu, who once played for Invincible Eleven Basketball team, said his idea of a national sports dialogue is a vision for leveraging sports as a foundational catalyst for democratic engagement and societal unity.
Satu said sporting events transcend their inherent entertainment value, adding that sports is instrumental in fostering public confidence in administrative institutions while simultaneously knitting together the diverse fabric of Liberia’s society around shared interests in athletics.
“Through collaborative sporting initiatives, we can establish a sense of national pride and collective purpose,” he said.
He, however, underscored the critical importance of integrating sports initiatives with educational curricula and youth engagement strategies.
“By embedding athletics within our educational framework, we cultivate essential life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and resilience in our youth.
This strategic alignment, he said, not only nurtures sporting talents but also addresses broader socio-economic challenges, positioning sports as a vital component of community development and economic revitalization.
He wants a concerted effort among all relevant stakeholders, government officials, sports federations, educational institutions, and civil society to embark on the essential dialogue.
He disclosed that such collaboration is fundamental in crafting comprehensive strategies that prioritize sports development and a promising vision for the future of sports in Liberia.
