The Liberia National Bureau of ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, has embarked on a sensitization campaign aimed at encouraging Liberians and others to obtain ECOWAS Brown Cards in a bid to promote road safety and the payment of just compensation and benefits to victims involved in accidents within the region.
The campaign named and styled “Taking the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance to the People” is expected to cover four counties including Grand Bassa, Margibi, Bong, and Nimba.
The ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme is a regional initiative that provides third-party liability insurance coverage for road traffic accidents across the ECOWAS member states.
The insurance card is vital for the protection and safety of road users traveling between member countries, ensuring that victims of cross-border accidents receive prompt and fair compensation, regardless of where the accident occurs within the ECOWAS region.
“For Liberians, the ECOWAS Brown Card is more than just a document; it is a shield of protection that guarantees their safety and security while traveling across borders. As a member of ECOWAS, Liberia is committed to upholding the principles of this scheme, ensuring that all road users, including commercial motorcyclists, vehicle drivers, and passengers, are adequately covered in the event of an accident. Despite the importance of this insurance, many Liberians remain unaware of its benefits and the ease with which they can obtain it. This gap in awareness is what the upcoming campaign seeks to bridge.”
The “Taking the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance to the People” campaign will be a comprehensive effort to reach road users across Grand Bassa, Margibi, Bong, and Nimba counties.
The counties were strategically chosen due to their significant road traffic activity and their role as major transit points for travelers moving within and beyond Liberia’s borders.
The campaign will adopt a multi-faceted approach to ensure that the message of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme is effectively communicated to the target audience.
A critical aspect of the campaign is to encourage the public to register for the ECOWAS Brown Card by paying the amount of US$10 and obtain a card from the Liberia National Bureau of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme office in Monrovia or at various insurance offices across the country.
It will actively engage commercial motorcyclists and vehicle drivers through their various unions, with the union heads being instrumental in mobilizing their members to attend awareness sessions where they will learn about the benefits of the ECOWAS Brown Card, the process of obtaining it, and the legal implications of not having this essential insurance.
“These engagements will take place in central locations within each county, making it accessible for as many road users as possible.”
The Secretary General of the Liberia National Bureau of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme Sahr A. Kaaba and other key stakeholders will make live appearances on various radio stations in the various counties as an opportunity to reach a broader audience, including those in remote areas who may not have direct access to the awareness events.
The campaign would also ensure the distribution of flyers containing detailed information about the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme.
“Beyond the scheduled events, the campaign will involve direct community outreach. This will include door-to-door visits in densely populated areas and interactions with community leaders, market women, and youth groups.”
The aim is to create a ripple effect, where the message of the ECOWAS Brown Card spreads organically through word-of-mouth, ensuring that even those who may not be directly involved in road transportation are informed and can share the information with others.
The campaign emphasizes that by just investing the little amount of US$10, citizens can have significant returns in terms of safety and legal protection when traveling.
“The ECOWAS Brown Card not only covers the holder but also extends protection to any third party who may be involved in an accident, ensuring that compensation is provided without lengthy legal battles or cross-border complications.”
Under this insurance scheme, the Liberia National Bureau of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme, under the stewardship of Mr. Sahr A. Kaba, has been at the forefront of promoting road safety and insurance coverage for Liberian road users.
The Bureau’s collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, particularly the Directors of Insurance and Press and Public Affairs, highlight the government’s commitment to ensuring that every road user is informed and protected.
“Mr. Kaba’s leadership has been pivotal in driving this campaign forward. His deep understanding of the insurance industry, coupled with his dedication to public service, has made him a key figure in advocating for the widespread adoption of the ECOWAS Brown Card in Liberia. His strategic approach to public engagement, particularly through grassroots initiatives like this campaign, reflects his belief that every Liberian deserves access to information that can safeguard their lives and livelihoods”, a statement issued in Monrovia noted.
The “Taking the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance to the People” campaign is expected to have a significant impact on road safety and insurance coverage in Liberia.
By reaching out to road users in some of the most active counties in the country, the campaign aims to increase the number of insured drivers and motorcyclists, thereby reducing the incidence of uninsured road accidents.
It is also poised to foster a culture of insurance awareness in Liberia.
“As more people become informed about the ECOWAS Brown Card and its benefits, it is anticipated that there will be a shift in public perception towards insurance in general. This could lead to increased demand for other forms of insurance, contributing to the overall development of the insurance sector in Liberia.”
