Monrovia – The University of Liberia campus-based student political party, Student Unification Party (SUP), has suspended its chairman Butu Levi for what the party terms as “gross violation of the constitution, precedence and the tradition of the party.”

The indefinite suspension of Levi, which was signed by 11 Politburo and Central Committee members paved the way for the co-chairman of the party, Prince G. Brown, to ascend as Acting Chairman of the party.
Addressing a news conference at the head office of SUP on the main campus of the university Wednesday, August 1, the chairman of the Welfare Committee of the party, Daniel Sargbe said “Levi has fallen prey to corruption, bribery and the despotic plans of the George Weah-led government.”
SUP, under Levi as chairman, has held several protests calling on President Weah to declare his assets and against the worsening economic problems that Liberians are facing under the CDC-led government.
The recent protest was on the 26th of July, the country’s Independence Day.
According to Sargbe, their suspended Chairman allegedly extorted money from the opposition political parties’ leaders to protest on Independence Day.
He also added that the suspension of Martin K. N. Kollie, the Secretary-General of the party, was a gross violation of the constitution of their party.
Sargbe: “The chairman was continuously doing business with politicians in the name of the party, thereby attempting to erode the rich history and moral values of our great movement.”
“The chairman is currently on the payroll of the government.”
In a strong tone, Sargbe added: “To this end and with immediate effect, the politburo and central committee, of the ever-potent vanguard Student Unification Party suspends Butu Levi as chairman of the party for time indefinite to save the image of the party and protect the unbending struggles in the interest of the masses.”
Sargbe called on Levi to turn over all party’s properties in his possession to Brown, the co-chair for Party Affairs.
“All militants, cadres, veterans, supporters and well-wishers of the indomitable vanguard Student Unification Party are asked to support this decision as anything, on the contrary, will represent an attack on the supremacy of the party,” Sargbe ended.
