Monrovia – The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has announced plans to press charges against individuals involved in recent assaults on two journalists, with a particular focus on the attack against Sylvester Choloplay of Spoon Network (Radio & Online TV).
Mr. Choloplay, a Liberian professional journalist known for his incisive reporting on governance and accountability, was assaulted on December 9, 2024, at the Capitol Building in Monrovia.
The incident occurred during an interview with Representative Dixon Seboe, live-streamed on social media platforms when staff or security members of Representative Seboe physically confronted Choloplay, seizing his recording device temporarily.
The altercation arose after Representative Seboe displayed aggressive behavior in response to Choloplay’s probing questions on the removal of the embattled Speaker of the 55th Liberian Legislature.
The Press Union of Liberia had condemned the attack, describing it as a clear violation of press freedom and a troubling reflection of hostility towards journalists.
“Sylvester Choloplay has built a reputation for asking the tough questions that hold leaders accountable. His work with Spoon Network is vital to upholding the public’s right to information, and such attacks are unacceptable,” said PUL President Julius Kanubah.
The union expressed profound disappointment in Representative Seboe’s conduct. “Rather than setting an example of professionalism and respect, Representative Seboe allowed his frustrations to dictate his actions, leading to belligerent and distasteful behavior,” Kanubah noted.
In addition to the assault on Choloplay, the PUL is also addressing the November 17 attack on journalist Nyantee Togba of OK FM. Togba was harassed by Unity Party loyalists during a National Executive Committee meeting in Paynesville, attended by the party’s political leader, President Joseph Boakai.
“These attacks are part of a disturbing trend of aggression toward journalists, and the PUL is committed to ensuring justice. Those responsible must be held accountable under the law,” Kanubah emphasized.
The PUL, in collaboration with the Liberia Media Lawyers Network, is pursuing legal action to address these violations and to safeguard press freedom. The union has also called on journalists to remain professional and vigilant, prioritizing their safety while continuing to serve the public’s right to information.
The PUL further reaffirmed its commitment to protecting journalists’ rights and ensuring that both Sylvester Choloplay and Nyantee Togba receive justice.
