MONROVIA – There are mounting calls for the Legislature to reconvene an emergency session for the investigation of leaked audio in which the chairman of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), Mr. Mulbah Morlu, making startling and embarrassing revelations about President George Weah and other officials of the government.
Liberians believe Morlu’s allegations against the President, if true, warrant his impeachment and should therefore not be taken lightly.
Henry Costa, Weah’s tough critic, has been releasing the leaked audio in episodes on his widely monitored talk show – The Costa Show.
Jethro Emmanuel Kolleh, a strong critic of George Weah, called on the Legislature to call off its annual constituency break to launch an impeachment probe.
“This is the best time for our Legislators to act. The revelation coming from the ruling party’s chairman needs to be looked into by the House of Representatives,” he said.
Mohammed Dukuly, a resident of Gbarnga, used his Facebook wall to call on his lawmaker Marvin Josiah Cole to lead the impeachment process by calling for the resumption of session by the Legislature. He noted that the matter is grave and needs urgent redress from the House of Representatives.
However, Isaac Redd, director of press at the House of Representatives, described as “unserious” those calling on the House of Representatives to call off its annual break.
Mr. Redd said it was unwise for the House of Representatives to convene an emergency extra ordinary session to authenticate a “regular gossip” or allegations trending on social media.
Mr. Redd said the House of Representatives can’t reconvene in the absence of the Senate, stating that the matter discussion “lacks the ingredients of no national security implications to warrant an emergency session.”
Commenting on the matter, Monsterrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillion said, according to the Constitution, only the House of Representatives can initiate impeachment proceedings.
Citing Article 43, Senator Dillon said: “It’s the prerogative of the House of Representatives to do so, the Senate can either convict or acquit after the House shall have and forwarded to the Senate for trail.”
