Monrovia – A consortium of youth organizations from River Cess County has hailed President George Weah for the opportunity given River Cess citizens to serve in his government.
The consortium comprises the River Cess Youth League, the Timbo Youth for Development, the Yarnie Youth Association, Federation of Liberian Youth/River Cess Chapter, and the Cestos Youth Movement.
According to the youth groups since its inauguration, the CDC led government under the leadership of President Weah has appointed several citizens of River Cess to top positions but recent appointment of Bill Twehway is beyond their expectations.
President Weah recently appointed former Montserrado County District Three Lawmaker Bill Twehway as Managing Director of the National Port Authority pending confirmation by the Liberian Senate.
“Before then, the Liberian leader appointed former AFL Chief of Staff, Daniel Ziahnkahn as Minister of National Defense; Atty. Phil Tarpeh Dixon, Deputy Minister for Manpower Planning and Human Resource Development at the Ministry of Labor; Madam Ruth Sawmadal, Assistant Minister for Administration at the Ministry of Internal Affairs; and Mr. Josephus Burgess, Commissioner at the Liberia Land Authority,” the group said in a release.
The Consortium of Rivercess Youth in a press statement signed by its Chairman Togar Melvin Cephas notes that the wave of employment of River Cess citizens at top-level positions in government is unprecedented and must be recognized by them.
According to them, unlike President Sirleaf who appointed only two of their kinsmen Christopher Neyor and Togar Gayewea McIntosh to topnotch post, Weah appointment of several citizens from the area speaks to his appreciation of their support.
Dr. Neyor served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Oil Company of Liberia, while Dr. McIntosh was Madam Sirleaf’s first Minister of the then Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs and later appointed Foreign Affairs Minister.
The consortium expresses optimism that more of its citizens will serve in topmost positions under the pro-poor government, considering the few appointments within eight months of the current administration.
Apart from the National Legislature, Twehway served as a senior public official, occupying the post of Assistant Minister for Curriculum and Test Book Research at the Ministry of Education, where he help transformed the country’s education sector.
Meanwhile, the Consortium of River Cess youth organization says it has explicit confidence in the ability of Mr. Twehway to transforming the National Port Authority.
“This appointment will help in resuscitating Liberia’s wrecked economy”, the group concludes in the release under the signature of its Chairman, Togar Melvin Cephas.
They are further calling on the Liberian Senate to Fastrack the confirmation of Mr.
Twehway as a way of ensuring that the gateway to Liberia’s economy is improved in generating needed revenues.
