TOTOTA, BONG County – Monie R. Captan, Chief Executive Officer of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), has expressed heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragic Totota fuel tanker explosion. The catastrophic incident, which occurred on December 26, tragically claimed the lives of over 40 individuals and left more than 80 severely injured.

In a solemn display of support, Mr. Captan personally led a delegation to Totota to meet with both the grieving families and survivors. The atmosphere was one of immense grief as residents of Totota congregated at the Town hall to receive the LEC delegation.
Mr. Captan, speaking on behalf of LEC, conveyed deep sympathies to the bereaved families, urging them to find strength during this national tragedy. He referred to the incident as a national disaster and rallied for unified support for the affected families. As an initial contribution, the LEC boss donated L$200,000 to the community. Additionally, Mr. Captan announced the commissioning of the Liberia Electricity Corporation’s Health and Safety Department to conduct training sessions for the community. These sessions aim to educate residents on effective measures in handling emergency situations.
The event witnessed the presence of local stakeholders, including the Bong County Disaster Management Coordinator, Lower Bong County Commissioner, women and youth groups, along with community leaders.
Meanwhile, in Totota, a mass burial ceremony was held for the 40 victims who lost their lives in the tragic fuel tanker explosion.
The incident happened when the tanker, involved in an accident, veered off the road, leading to a leakage that resulted in a devastating fire. Tragically, many of the victims suffered burns beyond recognition.
