Gbarnga, Bong County – A man, while attempting to sell his 5-year-old son, was apprehended ON Wednesday in Gbarnga by the Bong County Police Detachment.
Report by Selma Lomax, selma.lomax@frontpageafricaonline
The 39-year-old man identified as Abdulai Sellah was arrested as he tried to sell off his 5-year-old son to his neighbor for US$10,000.
Sellah was arrested when Puchu (name concealed), demonstrated his patriotism and repugnance for child trafficking by alerting the Police that the suspect had offer to sell his son to him.
It was gathered that Sellah’s decision to sell his son was triggered by the refusal of his girlfriend to find him a job.
However, the Police will get to know of what Puchu had all planned as Sellah struck a “deal” with Puchu, while pretending to be interested in the proposal. Puchu agreeing to “buy” the boy, told Sellah to wait briefly for him to get to the bank and withdraw the agreed sum of US$10,000.
But he will however run to the Police station in Gbarnga and report what transpired between him and Sellah. Immediately, Police detectives followed him to his office, where they arrested Sellah and took him along with his son.
Speaking to newsmen, Kelenso Flomo, the head of Crimes Services Division of the Bong County Police Detachment, disclosed that the suspect had confessed that he attempted to sell his son, adding that the matter was still being investigated.
An elder in the neighborhood, Bassey Joseph, expressed embarrassment over the incident. “It is quite unfortunate that such ugly incident occurred in our community.”
In a chat with newsmen, the suspect said that he was still unable to explain how he took the horrible decision to sell his son.
He said: “I don’t know what came over me. I am still confused. My girlfriend promised to buy me a car and she has not lived up to her promise.I am struggling to survive.
While I was waiting for the money, Puchu came with Policemen to arrest me in his office. I have regretted what I have done. I pray that my son would forgive me for the evil thing I tried to do him.
