Monrovia– Liberia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs has unveiled a comprehensive resolution stemming from a recent Local Government Retreat, outlining a clear path forward for strengthening local governance across the nation.
The resolution No. MIA/MC/2025/06/13-002, titled “A Resolution from the Local Government retreat with a focus on Progress, Operational, Challenges and Lesson Learned,” emphasizes decentralization and team building as key pillars for improved service delivery and accountability.
The retreat, held at the EJS Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, brought together stakeholders to review achievements, confront operational hurdles, and distill valuable lessons learned in the pursuit of effective local governance.
The participants recognized the significant strides made in devolving authority and resources, which have already positively impacted service delivery to communities.
However, the resolution also candidly acknowledges persistent challenges, including limited capacity, resource constraints, and coordination issues that have hampered optimal local government functions. In response, the resolution lays out a multi-faceted approach to address key commitments and strategic Actions summing up to eight core commitments and corresponding strategic actions in Commitment to Progress, Enhancement of Operational Capacity, Team Building and Leadership Development, Monitoring and Evaluation, Reporting, Resource Mobilization, Infrastructure Rehabilitation and Maintenance, and Collaboration.
The resolution further stipulates its dissemination to all relevant government agencies, local government offices, and development partners, aiming to foster a unified approach towards strengthening local governance in Liberia. This forward-looking resolution signals a renewed vigor in Liberia’s commitment to empowering its local communities and building a more responsive and effective government from the ground up.
