Liberia: Stakeholders Set to Review Progress, Plan Next Steps at Liberia Land Governance Roundtable

Monrovia – The Multi-Actor Platform on Land Governance and Responsible Agricultural Investment in Liberia (MAP Liberia Land Platform) will host a two-day roundtable discussion from May 29 to 30, 2025, in Monrovia, bringing together more than 100 stakeholders to assess progress and plan future land governance activities.

The gathering will include representatives from the Government of Liberia, international development partners, civil society organizations, community-based groups, traditional and religious leaders, youth, persons with disabilities, and other state and non-state actors.

The forum will focus on reviewing the outcomes of the Second National Land Conference held in September 2024 in Gompa City, Nimba County, where participants evaluated land governance reforms and issued key policy recommendations.

During the Monrovia meeting, stakeholders will revisit the “Gompa Declaration” and assess progress made in implementing the recommendations, while also identifying remaining challenges and laying out a concrete action plan with clear timelines to further land governance and responsible agricultural investment in Liberia.

Among the key areas of focus will be the use of alternative dispute resolution as an effective tool to address land-related conflicts involving women, youth, and persons with disabilities. There will also be emphasis on promoting better access to capital for women, enabling them to invest in land they acquire.

Participants will discuss ways to improve data systems related to customary land formalization and how to expand the Customary Land Management Intervention Tool, which includes mechanisms for tracking document submissions and providing status updates.

Additionally, the forum will explore how to incorporate Geographic Information System (GIS) data into land use planning and enhance information sharing on various land categories and potential conflict zones.

Stakeholders are also expected to consider the formation of a broader national land conference organizing committee that includes government institutions, civil society organizations, and international partners. This committee would work closely with the MAP Liberia Land Platform to ensure continuous monitoring of previous resolutions and effective planning for future conferences.

To support these efforts, the platform will propose the establishment of an inclusive Technical Working Group to review and validate steps for customary land formalization that can be jointly adopted by the government and civil society groups.
