Monrovia – Montserrado and Grand Bassa Counties have been crowned champions of the 2017/2018 National County Sports Meet in Football and Kickball respectively.
The girls from Grand Bassa County fought hard to deny Nimba County a third successive title with a 2-1 home run victory after ten rounds each.
Nimba went in to the finals with hope of retaining the title for themselves as they previously won the tournament two times.
In the football category, Bong County went down to defending Champions Montserrado County 2-0 in an entertaining match at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville.
The Champions secured their first title against Maryland County on penalties shootout and won their second title in grand style.
Montserrado coach Samuel Sumo’s side proved to be powerful in the first half and showed their defensive quality as they scored a goal in each half to win the match 2-0.
The champions got the game opener in the 35th through Sabastian Tucker’s volley effort that beat Bong’s goalkeeper.
Bong County largely dominated the second half with some attacking threat but goalkeeper Veine Smith made several decent saves which convinced pundits of his goalkeeping quality.
Mark Karley doubled Montserrado County lead after a Danbo Nah dispose a defender of the central Liberian boys and provided a cross for Karley to score his fourth goal of the tournament.
With 10th minute left on the clock at the SKD, the referee halted the match as fans and supporters engulfed the pitch in celebration.
In the third-place match in Football Nimba County secured a sweet 2-1 Victory over Margibi County to console their many fans.
The competition which started on March 31, 2018 to April 22, 2018 was played under the theme Uniting Liberians after Elections.
Host Liberia will battle the Elephants of Ivory Coast in a mouthwatering showpiece in Tuesday’s first match at 3:30pm before Guinea-Bissau face up against Sierra Leone at 6pm in Group A.
While in Group B,Senegal will take on Mali and Gambia host Guinea.
