MONROVIA – Watanga FC suffered their first league defeat of the season after the Oil boys bounced back from a goal down to claim an unlikely win at Tusa Field and move up to ninth place in the table. The league leaders Watanga went into the match as the only team in the top-flight league unbeaten after 16 games. However, LPRC Oilers ended Watanga’s unbeaten start to the season with a 2-1 defeat on Sunday, February 11, 2024.
Copper Sannah’s side were well on top after taking the lead through Emmanuel Sieh’s strike late in the first half, a lead they maintained up to the break. However, after the interval, LPRC Oilers were handed a lifeline soon when they leveled things from the experienced Gideon Williams’ strike.
It got worse for Watanga as youngster Roland Kamei scored Oilers’ second of the evening to secure all three points, ending Watanga’s unbeaten run. Watanga’s visit to Oilers was seen as the acid test of Sannah’s men, and it started perfectly when they hit the opener that goalkeeper Alpha Jalloh could only push into the net.
But Oilers kept their focus as they leveled things in the second half, and from that moment, they took control of the game until they secured the match winner. Sunday’s result moved Oilers up the table to ninth place with 20 points, while Watanga remained at the top of the table with 36 points.
Elsewhere, leaders Global Pharma FC bounced back to winning ways with a hard-fought 1-0 win over NPA Anchors at the ATS, moving them up to seventh place with 21 points from 17 games played, while NPA remained at the bottom of the table with five points.
At SKD Practice pitch, Mighty Barrolle showed they have the stomach to fight for the title. The Rollers, who have been impressive since the start of the campaign, outplayed FC Kallon Liberia to a 4-1 win. Barrolle is now second on the table with 34 points, while Kallon FC dropped into the relegation zone with 16 points, placing them 12th.
Title contenders Heaven Eleven FC settled for a 2-2 draw away to Nimba Kwado. The result puts Heaven Eleven in fourth place with 32 points, while Kwado is in eighth place with 21 points.
