MONROVIA-Liberia have advanced to the third round of the 2024 FIFA women’s under-17 World Cup qualifiers.
It follows the withdrawal of Mali, who were due to play Liberia in the second round, on 4 February in Monrovia and 10 February in Bamako.
Liberia will meet the aggregate winner from the matches between Libya and Senegal in May.
Liberia’s U-17 women’s national team was scheduled to face Mali both at home and away in the second round of the 2024 African U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
The first leg according to the fixture was to be played on 4 February in Monrovia, and the second leg should have taken place on 10 February in Bamako, with the aggregate winner advancing to the next round of the qualifiers.
“This is welcoming news for Liberia and our preparation for the next phase. We will continue us justify your inclusion campaign in order to have a select group of players to possibly face Senegal,” said head coach Sekou Manubah.
Manubah has announced a three-day (11, 12, 15 January at 3:30PM) open trial at the Samuel Kanyon Doe sports complex in Paynesville.
Liberia lost to Guinea 9-3 on aggregate during the 2023 FIFA women’s World Cup qualifiers in the second round, having lost 7-1 on 20 March 2022 in Conakry and drawn 2-2 on 6 March 2022 in Monrovia.
In recent times, Liberia has failed to participate in women’s youth competitions due to the George Weah-led government’s failure to allocate necessary funds for the team’s participation. However, with a new government set to take over, it seems that the country is ready for the qualifiers after many years.
