This draw solidified AS Mande’s position as representatives of WAFU Zone ‘A’ in Cote d’Ivoire, marking a significant achievement for the team. Both squads entered the match following draws against their respective opponents: AS Mande with Sierra Leonean side Mogbewmo Queens, and AS Dakar with Determine Girls in their second tournament match.
AS Mande’s Coach Moustapha Traore, whose squad secured the inaugural championship in 2021, comprehended the match’s importance and the stakes involved. Demonstrating awareness of the USD 100,000 prize and with his team leading the standings through a superior goal difference, he structured his team defensively and oriented towards counter-attacks. This strategic approach paid off, as the Malians maintained pressure against AS Dakar, who showcased their attacking prowess.
AS Dakar’s midfielder, Jeanne Niang, performed exceptionally throughout the game. She had an opportunity to give her team the lead when she received a splitting pass from Bineta Seck, but her shot was thwarted by goalkeeper Fatoumata Karentao.
During the first half, the Senegalese team had better chances, but Niang squandered several promising opportunities. Korka Fall struck a well-placed shot that hit the woodwork, and Wolimata Ndiaye missed a chance before halftime.
After the break, AS Mande opened the scoring against the run of play, with Oumou Kone finding the net with a brilliant finish. Kone received a through ball from Amanita Dia, enabling her to put her side ahead.
AS Dakar relentlessly pressed for an equalizer but struggled to capitalize on their chances. Frustration and murmurs became evident among AS Dakar’s players and technical staff. However, Niang revitalized the team’s spirit, utilizing a brilliant pass from Haby Balde. The midfielder watched goalkeeper Karentao before firing from close range to level the score.
Despite continuous pressure from AS Dakar, the Malians held their ground and secured their second championship title in three years. Meanwhile, Liberian Champions Determine Girls claimed third place in the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Sierra Leonean side Mogbewmo Queens. In addition to their on-field success, Determine Girls were also honored with the Fair Play award in the tournament.
