Monrovia-Last week, a letter purportedly written by Simeon Freeman, political leader of the Movement for Progressive Change surfaced with Freeman, reportedly stating his desire to quit politics and focus on his business operations.
The purported letter of resignation in the possession of FrontPageAfrica said to be under the signature of Freeman, alleges that Mr. Freeman told partisans of the MPC that he cannot continue in politics because of his businesses around Africa.
The first paragraph of the letter stated “I have been proud to serve the Movement for Progressive Change (MPC) for the last five years as Political leader, so it is with great gratitude, and a little bit of sorrow, that I must resign from this position and from Liberian politics”.
The letter further stated “I leave behind a record of transparency, total reform, and hard work with dedication, and I am happy to leave that legacy as the party’s members will decide to take from where I stopped. I intend to go on to other opportunities, which will hopefully allow me to continue to serve the public in the same manner. As you know I am a businessman with the intent of transforming our nation through my developmental minds”.
The letter dated June 22, 2016 accordingly written by Mr. Freeman stated “Several Months ago I informed my family and close friends of the members of the National Executive Committee of the MPC my decision to resign from the position of Political leader and as politician. Since actions of this kind are always the subject of rumors, gossip and speculation in our society, it is only politically responsible to make the reasons for this action known to the Liberian people. I am leaving politics to focus on family issues and to improve my businesses I have in Liberia and around Africa”.
Biggest joke, Freeman says
But the MPC political leader described the letter as the biggest joke of the century, saying he has not resigned from the MPC as it is stated in the letter.
He told the FrontPageAfrica via the social network Skype that those who wrote the letter did it to distract the minds of Liberians from the issues his party is pushing in his (Mr. Freeman) absence.
“I think the letter is a distraction only intended to divert our attention from the core issues the party is pushing, because we are encouraging government to quickly release details of how Harry Greaves, Victoria Sesay, Shaki Kamara and others met their untimely deaths, this is why they are using Siaka Toure’s radio station Prime FM. If
I want to resign my letter will not land at Prime FM, it will not even land in the office of Siaka Toure who is in the camp of Vice President Joseph Boakai, but that false letter will not stop putting government on its heels until the right thing is done,” he noted.
Freeman has however accused the Chief Executive Officer of the Aminata & Sons, Mr. Siaka Toure and Mamade Diakite as those behind the letter.
But Mamade Diakite denied having knowledge about the letter. He told the FrontPageAfrica Monday that the letter was collected by his department of news from a highly placed source within the MPC.
The MPC political leader said the MPC is troubled by recent Police tendencies of surrounding the homes of persons of interest for whatever reasons.
He said the police can arrest or surround a facility when in hot pursuit of a criminal or person in commission of a crime but not in the manner and form in which it is proceeding.
The MPC has been speaking on national issues, demanding specific revelations without involving the Judiciary Branch of government.
Freeman said though the government has shown a strong lack of trust in the Judiciary, the MPC believes in the Courts and will henceforth utilize the rights, privileges and opportunities provided by the Constitution and laws of Liberia by appealing to the Judiciary for action.
He said his party will go to court should the government fail to release the reports of several investigations it launched in the past.
Freeman said the MPC will go to court within two weeks to compel the government to release reports of investigations into the death of Greaves and others.
“We believe by moving away from talking in the public space and using the courts by praying for the specific writs associated with misconduct or wrong doings, the rampant abuse of power and authority could be curtailed and some level of reservation could be instilled in public officials, who strongly believe, access to power at a point in time, gives them the right to insult and abuse our taxes with impunity,” he said.
The MPC, he said believes using methods of abuse; utilized by previous governments to their own sorrow will not create the silence anticipated by the government, saying, chasing him (Simeon Freeman) from his home or locking up persons and inflicting them with pain will not silence critics.
Dropping of charges
Commenting on the government dropping charges against him, Freeman said the MPC welcomes the pronouncement with exceptions, saying government did not have any charges against him.
“There were no charges against me by government, “While it is not the responsibility of the Judiciary to guide the Executive; we believe, the Executive must show respect for the rule of law by taking those perceived to have violated or be in violation of the law to court and let a Sheriff serve the requisite writ on party litigants,” he noted.
