“I pray that we will be wise in the future, because I can tell you here today, that when I am elected as president, my first priority will be to create jobs for the young people,” he said.
“It will be jobs, jobs and jobs, because we have to find jobs for these children in every sector. I will be the agriculture president of Liberia and the economy of this country will be agro- based and we will move our country forward.”
Making this surprising revelation in an exclusive interview after the recent graduation exercise of Cuttington University in Suakoko, Bong County, Mr. Urey said despite the bad business climate facing business people, including himself, he will employ some of the recent graduates when the opportunity arises.
When asked as to why he would create job opportunities for young graduates only when he becomes president and not now, Mr. Urey bluntly answered:
“We are facing difficulties today because most of our businesses are beginning to close due to excessive taxes.
But notwithstanding, we have participated in doing internship for a lot of students and we will continue to do that and whenever the vacancy presents itself, we will be more than happy to employ them. But things are difficult when you do not generate any profit from your business. Right now, we are basically trying to manage.”
Mr. Urey, who is presently undertaking some renovations on the Cuttington University Campus, including the Epiphany chapel, the student center, computer lab, the bookstore and the Africana Museum, said it is not due to his political interest but as his way of giving back to his alma mater for making him who he is.
“I have been doing this for over twelve to fifteen years, long before I entered into politics. Because fifteen years ago, I did not know I was going to run for the presidency, so I am not doing this for any political reasons. But I am doing all this because Cuttington has made me what I am today”, he said.
Mr. Urey furthered “I received my BSc from this University and I presently serve as the secretary of the board of trustees of Cuttington.
You know in life, one has to identify many places to invest in and contribute, and I have identified Cuttington and the Presbyterian Church of Liberia. So I am giving back to my school and the church of part of what God has given to me.”
He concluded by congratulating the graduates, admonishing them to be wise in voting for their leaders during the 2017 general and presidential elections.
