Monrovia – The Global Justice, Peace, and Human Rights Advocacy Network (GJPHRAN), led by renowned Human Rights Activist Amb. Dr. Marie Scott Wilson is urgently calling on the government of Liberia to take decisive action against the rampant proliferation of illicit drugs and substance abuse that is destroying the future of the nation’s young people.
GJPHRAN urges the Republic of Liberia’s government to address this escalating crisis by implementing comprehensive measures aimed at eradicating or significantly reducing drug abuse. The organization appeals to relevant governmental agencies, including the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), the Ministry of Education, and other pertinent bodies, to collaborate in this critical fight. The National Legislature is also called upon to act swiftly by increasing budgetary allocations and legislating policy-guided programs and initiatives that effectively address this pressing issue.
GJPHRAN would like to express its appreciation to the 54th Legislature for its strong approach to combating drug issues by amending existing drug laws. This action aims to strengthen anti-drug efforts in Liberia. The impact of drug abuse in Liberia has been profoundly damaging for decades. GJPHRAN believes it is imperative for a national consensus to be established to combat what is increasingly becoming a national security emergency.
The proliferation of illicit drugs has resulted in numerous negative consequences, particularly affecting the youth, who are the most vulnerable demographic. This scourge severely undermines their physical health, mental well-being, educational attainment, and career prospects, thereby perpetuating cycles of poverty, crime, and social instability.
GJPHRAN advocates for an urgent increase in budgetary support for the LDEA and other responsible agencies. Adequate funding is crucial to enable these agencies to conduct extensive awareness campaigns, bolster law enforcement efforts, invest in rehabilitation facilities, and implement preventive programs targeting at-risk youth. Prevention remains the most effective strategy in addressing drug abuse among young people.
The government must allocate resources toward creating and supporting programs specifically designed to engage at-risk youth in meaningful activities. These programs should focus on providing alternative recreational activities, mentorship, life skills development, and vocational training to steer young people away from drugs and towards positive futures.
Additionally, GJPHRAN emphasizes the importance of establishing treatment centers across Liberia’s counties. Currently, the lack of sufficient treatment facilities poses a significant barrier to recovery for those struggling with addiction. Building and maintaining these centers will provide essential support for individuals seeking to overcome their addiction and reintegrate into society as productive citizens.
It is disheartening to note the lack of support from some government officials for the President’s emergency action plan, which includes drug testing for all ministers before they assume office. This measure is critical in demonstrating the government’s commitment to a drug-free society. GJPHRAN strongly urges the government to enforce compliance among these officials, ensuring they serve as role models in the fight against drug abuse.
As a pro-democracy and civil society movement, GJPHRAN is profoundly concerned about the alarming proliferation of illicit drugs and substance abuse in Liberia. This urgent issue demands immediate attention and concerted action from all state actors and international partners. By increasing budgetary support, creating robust programs for at-risk youth, building treatment centers, and enforcing drug test requirements for government officials, Liberia can safeguard the future of its younger generations from the devastating consequences of drug abuse.
GJPHRAN remains committed to working with the government and other stakeholders to combat this crisis and ensure a safer, healthier future for all Liberians.
