MONROVIA – Liberia’s President-elect, Joseph Nyumah-Boaklai, has assured the relatives and victims of Monday’s incident, which resulted in three confirmed deaths and numerous injuries among jubilant Unity Party partisans, that a thorough investigation will be conducted.
He made this commitment during his visit to the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, where victims are currently hospitalized, with some in intensive care following the confirmed deaths.
His statement was in response to a plea from one of the victims’ relatives, urging a swift investigation and cautioning that business cannot continue as usual. At the hospital, Grand Bassa County Senator Nyounblee Karnga-Lawrence described the situation as an “incident” rather than an accident, emphasizing that the motive has not yet been established.
During a news conference held at the police headquarters on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, Police spokesperson Moses Carter stated that the LNP (Liberia National Police) “has launched an investigation into a tragic accident that led to 25 persons being injured.” Among the 25, two males and one female were reported dead at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Monrovia.
Police investigations revealed that the incident was caused by a vehicle operator who ran into supporters of the Unity Party celebrating victory at their headquarters. Mr. Carter identified the operator suspect as Lawrence K. Williams, a resident of Du Port Road Flower Pot community, who has been arrested and is currently undergoing investigation at the police headquarters.
