MONROVIA – Despite the Legislature’s endorsement of President George Weah’s request for an extension, both the Senate and House of Representatives failed to hold a session on Thursday. This was attributed to the president’s failure to submit a declaration for the extension.

Last week, the Plenary of the Liberian Senate approved President George M. Weah’s request to extend the 6th Session of the Legislature by two (2) weeks. The extension was set to begin on Monday, December 11, 2023, and conclude on December 22, 2023.
The decision to extend the 6th Session was based on a communication from the Chief Executive, urging the Senate to extend its session to allow ample time for the submission of the 2024 National Draft Budget and other necessary instruments aimed at addressing critical issues affecting the State.
According to a Senate Press Release, the endorsement of the President’s communication for extension was emphasized due to its importance, particularly during this transitional period when crucial matters need to be adequately addressed.
Originally, the 6th Session of the Liberian Senate was scheduled to conclude on Friday, December 8, 2023. However, with the endorsement of the extension, the session will now adjourn on Friday, December 22, 2023.
Executive Chairperson Cllr. Alexandra Kormah Zoe highlighted the necessity of this declaration, citing its role in ensuring transparency and accountability within the government. The process, guided by the New LACC Act of 2022, underscores confidentiality while requiring accuracy and compliance with legal standards.
