MONROVIA – The Chairman of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has provided a clarification to FrontPageAfrica through a telephone interview, stating that Mr. Jeremiah Sulunteh is not the party’s national campaign chairman, but rather the campaign chairman for Bong County.
This clarification comes shortly after erroneous news circulated on social media, suggesting that Mr. Sulunteh, a former member of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), had been appointed as the National Campaign Chairman.
During the telephone interview with FPA, Chairman Morlu acknowledged an oversight on his part for mistakenly announcing Mr. Solunteh as the national campaign chairman. He assured the public that the party would soon release a comprehensive list of all its campaign team members to avoid any further confusion.
In related developments, additional appointments have been made for key campaign positions. Madam Nora Finda Bundo, the Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs, has been named as the National Campaign Coordinator. Atty. Garrison Yealue, the Chairman of the Governance Commission, will serve as the National Campaign Vice Chair for Administration.
These appointments were announced approximately a week after President Weah appointed Lenn Eugene Nagbe, the Commissioner of the Liberia Maritime Authority, as his campaign manager.
During Thursday evening’s press conference, Morlu expressed his concerns about the opposition’s readiness to govern the country, emphasizing the significant progress made under President Weah’s first term in office.
“CDCians must not underestimate the achievements we have made. Handing power to inexperienced and ill-prepared individuals could jeopardize our hard-won gains. It is simply too risky to entrust power to those who seek to exploit and then leave. They have their own agendas, aiming to seize and run,” stated the CDC Chairman.
Morlu further asserted, “We must ensure President Weah’s re-election on the first ballot, with an even bigger victory than in 2017. We are committed to leaving no one behind this time.”
Following his appointment, Ambassador Sulunteh saw the opportunity as a call to duty by the CDC.
“I embrace this challenge and pledge to work diligently with all of you, including the Liberian people, fellow partisans, and the media, to fulfill the vision of a second term for President Weah,” said Mr. Sulunteh.
He clarified, “When I joined the CDC in October 2020, many doubted my intentions, but today, I reiterate that it was a deliberate decision.”
“I did it with a purpose, as I genuinely believe in President Weah’s dedication to Liberia’s well-being. Together, we must create the platform to grant him that second chance to accomplish unfinished tasks,” he continued.
Ambassador Sulunteh emphasized the need for teamwork, stressing that a cohesive campaign team is essential for a resounding victory.
“We will unite and put our collective efforts into the campaign. I call upon all partisans to maintain civility during this period. We have fought hard for peace, and it is our duty to protect it while we campaign in cities, towns, and villages,” Mr. Sulunteh stated.
In the 2017 run-off Presidential election, Ambassador Sulunteh had pledged his support to President George Weah. He officially joined the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) in Gbarnga City, Bong County, in October 2020.
Prior to this, Sulunteh had been a member of the Unity Party until 2016 when he ran as the running mate to former Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Party of Liberia (NDPL), Ambassador Winston Tubman, during the 2005 Presidential elections.
