Over the weekend, some citizens under the banner, “Citizens of Grand Cape Mount County and Workers of BMMC” petitioned the Liberian Government, citing 32 counts against the company to be addressed with pressure from the government.
But in a sharp response to the petition on Sunday, February 11, 2024, the leadership of the BMMC/CMC Workers Union expressed shock when the purported petition was seen making rounds on the social media.
The leadership of the Union through its Chairman, Emmanuel Weedor clarified that it has no knowledge of the mentioned petition, and it has not been involved in any discussion or action related to such a statement, including the allegations contained in the document.
The workers union says it regards such a petition as political and not in line with the responsibilities of the union.
The leadership also emphasizes that it respects every institution within the community, as well as the rights of the company, and are not in a position to overstep their bounds.
“It is important to emphasize that the primary focus of our union organization is confined to matters within our working environment and labor-related issues. We maintain a stance of political neutrality and are not affiliated with any political organization or issue,” the release added.
At the same time, the leadership of the Bea Mountain Mining Workers Union has firmly warned those staging protest and issuing purported petitions and hiding behind members of the union to immediately desist.
Meanwhile, the union reiterates its commitment to working with the management of the Bea Mountain Mining Corporation in the interest of its members, adding that should there be any issue of concern, there is an appropriate way to engage management.
