Monrovia – Meapeh Kou Gono, the mother of football legend George Weah has strongly debunked a woman claiming to be her sister, who appeared on the Catholic Radio station Radio Veritas Monday and rained insults on her for taking Mr. Weah to court in the United States of America.
A lady calling herself Mariam Gono phoned in on the Catholic-run Radio Veritas where she claimed that Meapeh is her sister and slammed her for only making use of the State of Georgia Law which provides that a party can file a suit as many times as possible even if it has been thrown out of court several times.
The purported sister to Meapeh also stated that her sister is only faking a case against Weah whom she said, has been supporting the child.
According to the lady caller, the case against Weah is not for child support, but rather abandonment because her ‘sister Meapeh’ informed the court that Weah resides in the United States and has abandoned the child.
Mariam in series of allegations against Meapeh said with such impression that Weah resides in the United States and is failing to visit the child prompted the court to uphold the complaint from Meapeh.
The caller declared that the case against Weah is dead before hanging up the phone with no further identify including place of resident or phone number.
But the baby’s mother, in a rare response when contacted by FrontPageAfrica via email Tuesday said she was not ready to speak officially on the matter as it is in continuance but clarified that the lady impersonating to be her sister is a poorly and crafty move by the Mr. Weah’s fanatics to use a female to neutralize the overwhelming support and kind sentiments Liberian women home and abroad have given her.
“I am cognizant of the fact that the issue of my child that has become public; our detractors think that a female masquerading as a sister will help their propaganda.”
The mother continued: “I’m one of two children in my family and interestingly my sibling is a young man. I have no siblings in Liberia to begin with; the propaganda is cheap and misleading.”
Ms. Gono expressed thanks and to all well-meaning Liberians who have given enormous support to my child’s wellbeing.
“The women of Liberia through their love and support have lifted my spirit. I have gotten calls from as far as women’s group in Nimba, women in political parties, women and children’s advocates.
And while it is true I have yet to speak publically on this matter, I must refute any attempt to portray my family as divided. I thank all those who are supporting us constructively and when I say us, it includes Weah as well. It is a difficult time for all of us.
For me as a mother wanting a deserving future for my child, for Weah being a father and defendant at once, for our daughter who misses her father and for nearly two years have only read of him in the media. The fanatics will never be of help. This case has been ongoing since it was filed in Jan 2015 and we are all worn out and look forward to its conclusion.”
In an article published on an online news website GNN Liberia quoting the lady claiming to be Mariam Gono, it stated that the family of Madam Meapeh Gono will shortly release a statement to rubbish the report which she noted was the work of detractors, stressing, “Our family is not happy of what is being reported today about Senator Weah dragging our name into it,” the website quoted Madam Gono as saying.
But shortly after a Voice of America (VOA) report quoting a court clerk confirming that the case against Mr. Weah is on the docket for May 11, 2016 as was reported by FrontPageAfrica, Radio Veritas issued a disclaimer on the comments made by the purported sister to Meapeh.
The legal matter in the United States is taking a political trend back home with supporters of Weah insisting that there is political motive behind the publication of court documents.
Mulbah Morlue, Vice Chairman for Operations and Mobilization of the CDC told the VOA that the publication has political undertone intended to blemish the image of Weah who has declared that he is running for a second time as presidential candidate.
Since the publication, Ms. Gono continues to be vilified by supporters of Weah with some publicly raining insults on social media.
