MONROVIA – Liberian Surgeons Dr. Edward Shaw and Gabriel Peal are currently in Liberia on a medical mission, providing free surgeries until the end of March. The initiative, in collaboration with Harvest Intercontinental Ministries Unlimited, is conducting screenings at the Darlingston Johnson Medical Clinic in Chugbor, on the Old Road. Prior to this, the team completed a two-week medical mission with Harvest in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
This isn’t the first time these surgeons have returned home for missions. They have partnered with Harvest Ministries multiple times in recent years, offering relief to hundreds of people from as far away as Nimba and Grand Gedeh Counties.
The surgeries will be performed at the JFK Medical Center and Redemption Hospital in New Kru Town. In 2022 alone, over a hundred surgeries were performed, primarily on males as young as 12 years old and many older adults suffering from hernias, some for several years.
Dr. Shaw, based in Tennessee, United States, expressed, “It’s a gesture of love, and it’s impossible not to respond to the needs of our own people when we can genuinely bring healing.”
The drugs necessary for the mission have been acquired through donations. Due to the overwhelming need for medical attention in 2022, many were turned away due to time constraints. To address this, the surgeons have extended their stay and are now accompanied by a dental team who will be seeing patients throughout the week.
Screening has been rigorous, with patients arriving early to take advantage of this opportunity.
