Monrovia – The anticipation in Liberia reaches a fever pitch as citizens eagerly await the National Elections Commission (NEC) to announce the results of the recent elections. Many believe that the tranquility of the nation hinges on the outcome of this crucial moment.
FrontPage Africa took to the streets of Monrovia to gauge the sentiments of the people directly affected by the impending announcement. Here’s what some Liberians had to say:
Siafa Kanneh – Chairman of the National Revolutionary Movement of Liberia
“The Constitution gave rise to the NEC to pronounce election results based on the will of the Liberian people; it did not give the right to the NEC to announce any result. The NEC boss was appointed by the President but does not work according to the will of the President.”
Johnson P. Lamar JR. – Vice-chair for Administration Nelson Mandela Forum
“I want Liberians to manage their expectations. However, the writing is on the wall, and it cannot be tampered with from any angle. The election house has the authority to announce the right result, and that way, peace can be maintained. I urge every Liberian to accept the result if it is credible. Not any result the Liberian people will accept.”
Theodora Nana
“I trust that the NEC will give the result that will reflect the will of the Liberian people. I expect that President Weah will be reelected. I urge the person who will lose the election to concede defeat and let us, as Liberians, move on. The election result is the will of the people. We have some ex-warlords from UP. Prince Johnson and Melton Blayee are all threatening the peace, and so we accept election violence, but it won’t be for long.”
Christopher Dennis – Montserrado County District #7 resident
“My expectation is the proper result from NEC, and whoever wins the election, the loser should accept the results because we do not want any problems in this country. I trust NEC to give the right result because they did good work the first time, and so I trust them this second round of the election.”
Johnetta D. Allison – Resident of Jacob Town
“We expect no other result than the one that will make Joseph Boakai President and Jeremiah Koung. That is the will of the Liberian people. As a Liberian, I trust the NEC to give the report the Liberians have worked for.”
