ELECTORAL VIOLENCE is a threat to democracy and the well-being of any nation. It corrodes the very foundation on which a society is built, undermining trust in institutions and dividing communities. As Liberia approaches a critical juncture in its democratic journey, the recent clash between the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change and the Unity Party demands immediate attention and resolute action.
THE CIVIL SOCIETY Human Rights Advocacy Platform of Liberia and the Election Coordinating Committee (ECC) have both raised their voices against the disturbing outbreak of violence that marred the electoral landscape on August 10, 2023. This incident stands in stark contradiction to the principles outlined in the Farmington River Declaration, a commitment to peaceful elections made by all political parties and presidential candidates. The Farmington Declaration was intended to be a beacon of hope, a pledge to refrain from any form of violence during the electoral process. However, the recent clash between supporters of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and the opposition Unity Party (UP) serves as a harsh reminder of the importance of accountability and responsible conduct.
THE CALL FOR an independent and unbiased investigation by the Liberia National Police (LNP) is an imperative step toward justice and transparency. Promptly identifying and apprehending the perpetrators of violence is not only a matter of justice but a signal that Liberia’s commitment to upholding the rule of law remains unwavering. The outcomes of such investigations must be made accessible to the public, reinforcing trust in the process and demonstrating the nation’s resolve to combat impunity.
THE RESPONSIBILITY, however, does not solely rest on law enforcement agencies. Political parties, candidates, and their supporters must exercise restraint and respect for the rights of others. It is vital for leaders to remind their followers of the importance of peaceful engagement and reject any form of intimidation or hate speech. Elections should be a platform for healthy discourse on policy matters, a chance for citizens to make informed choices based on substantive issues rather than fear or violence.
THE NEC’S role as an impartial arbiter in the electoral process is paramount. Ensuring that political parties and independent candidates adhere to their campaign schedules and guidelines can help prevent clashes and further violence. All stakeholders must come together to ensure that Liberia’s democracy continues to mature and thrive. The international community, as partners in this democratic journey, should exert collective pressure against those who undermine the sanctity of elections through their actions.
AS THE ECC rightly points out, these elections are crucial for Liberia’s fragile democracy. To consolidate the gains made so far, all segments of society must work hand in hand. The Liberia National Police must demonstrate impartiality, political parties must campaign responsibly, the National Election Commission must uphold its mandate, and citizens must demand a peaceful and fair electoral process.
ELECTORAL VIOLENCE has no place in a society that aspires to foster peace and democratic values. The Liberian people, having endured a painful history, deserve an environment where their voices are heard without fear and where their choices are respected. It is only through a collective commitment to accountability, responsibility, and respect that Liberia can continue on the path toward lasting peace and prosperity.
