According to court records, on August 21, 2023, at around 11:00 hrs, suspect Charles Joefula had just returned from performing his National duty as a DEA agent. He parked his vehicle, took his motorcycle, and went to Logan Town in search of his friend, Moses Sumo, where they typically met to entertain themselves after working hours.
Defendant Joefula is not a licensed firearm carrier, nor has he received any formal firearms training.
The defendant mishandled the firearm prematurely while in a gathering where people usually gathered for entertainment within the neighborhood.
The DEA agent called his girlfriend, Johnnete Smallwood, to meet at their usual meeting place.
The victim later appeared at the entertainment spot and met the defendant, his friend Moses Sumo, and Mama Weah.
Moses Sumo offered the deceased a drink.
While defendant Joefula was engaged in conversation with his colleagues, he recklessly discharged the firearm, resulting in the death of victim Smallwood.
After the single-barrel shotgun went off, the defendant ran to his friend Sumo and said, “I mistakenly killed my girlfriend.”
